Introduction

The Solid Waste Disposal utility operates the Anchorage Regional Landfill, located in Eagle River, and two transfer stations (Central Transfer Station in Anchorage and the Girdwood Transfer Station). For your safety, SWS requires all patrons to wear safety vests on the commercial side of the Central Transfer Station (CTS), and on the working face of the Anchorage Regional Landfill (ARL) at all times. Hard hats are recommended, but are not required. For questions regarding the​​​is policy, please call (907) 343-6250.

Refrigerator/Freezer Disposal at Anchorage Regional Landfill and Central Transfer Station 

Please remove doors prior to disposal at the Anchorage Regional Landfill and Central Transfer Station. Appliances must be empty. Please contact customer service SWCS@anchorageak.gov or call (907) 343-6250.

Anchorage Regional Landfill

The Anchorage Regional Landfill (ARL) is located at the intersection of the Glenn Highway and Hiland road, near the community of Eagle River, Alaska. The address is 15500 E. Eagle River Loop Rd, Eagle River, AK 99577.

All loads must be covered and secured prior to arrival at the facility. Uncovered or unsecured loads are subject to an additional charge of $30. For more information.

Services at the Anchorage Regional Landfill include residential and commercial trash disposal, recycling, and household hazardous waste collection.

Wood Lot, Eagle River

The Eagle River Wood Lot is located at 15500 Eagle River Loop Road (off the Hiland Road exit off the Glenn Highway) and is operated by Solid Waste Services at the Anchorage Regional Landfill.​

Wood lot disposal is free for Municipality of Anchorage residents only. The wood lot will be open every Friday and Saturday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The following materials are accepted at the Wood Lot at the Anchorage Regional Landfill: 

  • Brush and branches
  • Cut trees must be less than 6ft long
  • Debris from residential properties only
  • Lumber and wood fence posts (cannot have any metal, concrete, or other materials attached)
  • “Clean” tree stumps, they cannot have any rocks, dirt, landscaping debris attached

The following materials cannot be processed in our shredder therefore, not accepted at the wood lot and will result in a full charge load:

  • Tree stump clusters
  • Grass or loose leaves (leaves not on branches)
  • Dirt or rocks
  • Bagged materials (no bags please)
  • Mixed loads (e.g. wood debris mixed with garbage and recycling) Please make a separate trip for garbage and recycling.
  • Garbage or metal​​
  • Debris from a commercial property or land clearing activity is not accepted 

When entering the Anchorage Regional Landfill, please notify scale house staff that you are visiting the wood lot, and follow signs directing you to the specified area. An attendant will be on site to answer any questions you might have. A reminder that all loads brought to the Anchorage Regional Landfill must be secured or covered. Scavenging for firewood is strictly prohibited. ​

Central Transfer Station​

The Central Transfer Station (CTS) is located in Midtown. The SWS administration building are at 1111 E 56th Ave.

Commercial entrance: 1111 East 56th Avenue

Residential entrance: 54th Avenue and Ingra

The transfer station receives commercial refuse collection vehicles, residential refuse collection vehicles, and household vehicles (cars and pick-ups) from throughout the metropolitan Anchorage area. The refuse is then loaded into large trailers, which are then transported to the Anchorage Regional Landfill for final disposal.

This location also provides a location for the collection of residential CFC-containing appliances 
, used oil, batteries, and household hazardous waste.

Construction and demolition debris, land clearing waste, medical waste and liquid waste, hot tubs and commercially collected refrigerators ​are NOT accepted at this facility. 

All loads must be covered and secured prior to arrival at the facility. Uncovered or unsecured loads are subject to an additional charge of $30.

Girdwood Transfer Station – RESIDENTIAL USE ONLY

​Located on Ruane Road, off of the Alyeska Highway, in the community of Girdwood. You must go to the end of Ruane Road, and the facility is located on the right just before AWWU’s Treatment Building. 

All loads must be covered and secured prior to arrival at the facility. Uncovered or unsecured loads are subject to an additional charge of​ $30. 

This facility only takes residential solid waste. The following waste is not accepted at the Girdwood transfer station:

Commercial waste, refrigerators, washers, dryers and other cfc containing products, large animals, asbestos, demolition & land clearing debris, as​p​halt, liquids, grease, cooking oils, medical waste, and empty drums over 30 gal.
